Organs of the State II: Body of Evidence

The Gulf News recently reported on the plight of Huma Hussan and her husband, Kamran:

Kamran Hassan, 30, from Pakistan, moved to Dubai with his wife, Huma, 28, five months ago where she has been diagnosed with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. It is a disease where gradually the air sacs of the lungs are replaced by fibrotic tissue causing an irreversible loss of the tissue's ability to transfer oxygen into the bloodstream. "My wife needs a lung transplant but there are no live donors for lungs, you need a sudden death case and hope for matching lungs," said Hassan.

Like any devoted husband would, Kamran is doing everything within his power to aid his wife. Still, obstacles abound: He wants to take his wife

to China for a lung transplant operation (but) is unable to book flights because airlines are restricting the amount of oxygen he can bring on board that are vital for his wife's survival.

There is also is also the matter of money:

"A hospital near Shanghai, the Wuxi Chest Hospital is ready to admit her. They said they could do the transplant in two months but we have no money for the operation and no airline will take us," said Hassan.

I have tremendous sympathy for Kamran. When I was his age I, too, was the primary caregiver for a terminally ill spouse. My heart goes out to him...and yet a part of me hopes that the two never make it to China and get that transplant. My mind says it can't be justified because of the growing body of evidence indicating that something is horribly awry in the way Chinese transplant doctors go about their work.

Though it has been largely neglected by the global mainstream media, a report issued last month by two Canadians - former Canadian Secretary of State (Asia Pacific) David Kilgour and international human rights lawyer David Matas - paints a damning picture of Chinese organ procurement and transplant practices. The results of the investigation, entitled Report into Allegations of Organ Harvesting of Falun Gong Practitioners in China were summarized in the Epoch Times. Here are some pertinent excerpts:

Independent Canadian investigators say they are convinced that the organs of Falun Gong practitioners in China are being harvested for profit, according to a report released July 6. "Based on what we now know, we have come to the regrettable conclusion that the allegations are true. We believe that there has been and continues today to be large scale organ seizures from unwilling Falun Gong practitioners..."

The 46-page document, accompanied by 14 appendices, is the culmination of their two-month investigation into allegations that Falun Gong prisoners of conscience in China are being murdered for their vital organs—including hearts, kidneys, livers and corneas—which are then sold for profit. Some of the customers are foreigners "who normally face long waits for voluntary donations of such organs in their home countries," says the report. "Organ harvesting of unwilling donors where it is either systematic or widespread is a crime against humanity," state the authors.

The extraordinarily short wait times for organs in China—one to two weeks for a liver compared with 32.5 months in Canada (median wait for 2003)— and the number of transplants done compared to identifiable organ sources are further incriminating factors. Kilgour and Matas also present self-accusatory material from Chinese transplant centre websites that advertise the immediate availability of large numbers of organs from living donors.

Of course it is not a certainty that the organ Huma would get would be from one of these prisoners. But after reading the full report, including transcripts of conversations with surgeons, as shown below, I think there is too high of a risk:

The report also contains transcripts of telephone conversations in which officials at various Chinese hospitals, detention centres, and courts admitted to using organs from Falun Gong practitioners. Callers working with the investigators had posed as Canadians and Americans inquiring about transplants.

The transcript of a conversation with a doctor at the Nanning City Minzu Hospital in Guangxi Autonomous Region on May 22, 2006 reads:

"Why is it easy for them [Guangzhou] to get [organs from Falun Gong practitioners]?

"Because they are an important institution. They contact the judicial system in the name of the whole university."

"Then they use organs from Falun Gong practitioners?

"Correct." … "What you used before (organs from Falun Gong practitioners), were they from detention centre(s) or prison(s)?"

"From prisons."

"And it was from healthy Falun Gong practitioners…?"

"Correct. We would choose the good ones because we assure the quality in our operation."

The decision that Kamran and Huma have to make is perhaps the most difficult they may ever face. My only advice is this: use your heads and your hearts.

Starling, I have discovered more detail on the congressional brief that was cited previously.

The name of the brief is "The Collateral of Suppression", written for Senator Dianne Feinstein, member of US Congressional Executive Committee on China.

Please allow me to cite another relevant portion:

"Specialist in Asian Affairs at the Congressional Research Service, Thomas Lum, noted that the evidence could have easily been distorted. The individuals calling the hospitals were all affiliated with FLG, and Lum said that it is unlikely for doctors and officials working for the state to casually divulge such sensitive and damaging information so easily.

Moreover, Lum’s efforts to contact both the Chinese journalist and doctor’s wife have been fruitless, as FLG members direct all communications toward these individuals and they often do not respond. Harry Wu, a longtime political activist known for his hardline anti-PRC views, announced on August 9, 2006 that he would challenge the allegations made by FLG about targeted organ harvesting, especially the claim about the Sujiatun concentration camp.

About the report, the South China Morning Post reports, “Mr. Wu, who has spent 15 years gathering evidence on the harvesting of organs from executed Chinese prisoners, said the information was based on the testimony of two witnesses, neither of whom had first-hand information. He believed the reports were fabricated.” Wu had tried to follow up with the witnesses just as Lum had—to the same futility. In the face of these criticisms, including from even Wu, who formerly held friendly relations with FLG, all things considered the allegations FLG has made about a targeted campaign of state-sponsored genocide are most likely untrue."

Starling, 'bobby fletcher' with lower case b and f, is my blog handle.

I posted my comment in your blog and signed with my real name, out of respect for you.

if you note closely, you'll see something amiss with "Bobby Fletcher's" comments. Several things actually. Just one is the fact that the reply came within minutes of my post. Second, it is undersigned "Charles Liu". So who is commenting here. Also follow the links to "Bobby's" blogs and see that he is strongly biased against FG followers, biased in a religious sense. That's his right, of course, but from the first sentence of his comment, it's clear how little sympathy he expresses for them as human beings. Who are you really, "Bobby", and what's your agenda?

Bob do you understand the serious allegations put forth in the Kilgour-Matas report on organ harvesting targeting Falun Gong practitioners across China. ( http://investigation.go.saveinter.net )

I thought you cared for the Chinese people.

The Chinese embassy has formulated a set of contradidtions similar to that one of Charles' which I completely disagree with--most of it is unfounded and a direct attack on the authors of the report and the Falun Gong.

The free world is still waiting for China to give an explanation for the 41,500 organ transplants unaccounted for (in the report). That is telling. Have the many Falun Gong practitioners who have disappeared in China become unwilling organ donors? The answer is yes.

I find it unfortunate that Mr. Harry Wu's investigation in the North of China proved to be fruitless and that in turn his report is being used to discredit the Kilgour-Matas findings. Maybe his team should have gone there before March 9 when the story first broke in the Epoch Times. News reports confirm that after March 9th, the hospital site was cleaned up swiftly to hide all evidence and only later on the Communist Party officials invited the free world to come and investigate. But oddly enough the regime has refused to grant visas to anyone who asked to investigate further. Meanwhile the US State Dept. was taken through a show tour--the regime being with them every step of the way but they have kept the file opened and are still interested in the case.

It's worth mentioning that the Kilgour-Matas investigation team examined 18 pieces of evidence to draw their conclusions and that the hospital visited by the US State Dept. and Mr. Wu only accounts for a small portion of the report. Many hospitals were investigated, not just that one--so 99% of the report is not about that hospital. Moreover hospital staff openly admitted to the organ source being from the Falun Gong in 15 instances and these digital recordings have been well validated. Matas calls this practice a new from of evil on the planet.

The K-M report has been well received in their travels to Brusels, Berlin, London, Washington DC with the Australian government requesting the Chinese embassy for an independent investigation to be allowed. Kilgour has met with rights organizations which are already paying close attention to this issue as is the UN.

It is high time that Communist China be made accountable for their crimes against humanity and for the free world to reassess their take on China. As I recall China was given the 2008 Olympics on the premise that their human rights record improve. In my eyes the well documented persecution of Falun Gong is enough to disqualify them instantly along with the reports of large scale organ harvesting which would make their record stoop to a new low.

Starling, have you looked into the veracity of Falun Gong's allegation?

I have been following the Falun Gong story since March. I researched this matter after being given a flyer in Chinatown - and I have found many things wrong with this allegation.

In my humble opinion Falun Gong's actions not only discredited their own cause, they also unnecessarily detracted from honest examination of China's human rights record.

FLG's nefarious indictment muddles the rational discussion of issues such as China's legal reform, and Chinese society's moral and ethical standards on dignity and treatment of the condemned, or even death penalty crossing the cultural divide.

In that spirit, I would like to bring to your attention some contrarian facts surrounding Falun Gong's recent media activity:

(all citations are at the end)

- Mr. Mike Stekeetee of The Australian had reported in April US congressional investigation finding the allegation a gross exaggeration. An US Congressional Executive Committee on China (CECC) brief subsquently commented on veracity of Falun Gong's claim of genocide.

- US State Department investigated and found the allegation not credible.

- Harry Wu, directory of Laogai Research Foundation in DC, investigated the allegation and found the witness unreliable

- Melbourn Australia-based dissident Mr. Zhang HeTse of China Aid Online (?) has come forward and supported Harry Wu's finding, while pointing out FLG's phone call evidence is fake.

- The hospital Falun Gong accused in reality is a joint venture with a company affaliated with the Malaysian government. Malay officials have documented prior year visit, and the facility has been open to public for years.

- Mr. David Kilgour, author of a Canadian FLG report and a long time prosecutor, ignored obvious misrepresentation of evidence in his own report that used autopsy photo as evidence or organ harvesting.

Specifically, Kilgour report Appendix 12, Case 1, involving Mr. Wang Bin. Even according to Falun Gong's own evidence, an autopsy was performed as part of Mr. Wang's murder investigation held by local authority.

However, Kilgour report ignored the misrepresentation and recoreded it as evidence of organ removal, ommitting the fact organ removal by medical examiner during autopsy is routine.

In reality the photo proves the opposit is true.

- Mr. Kilgour can not divorce himself from the fact his report is sponsored by a Falun Gong group in Washington DC that is evidentely political.

In conclusion, while China's human rights record should be examined, writing allegory of "Schindler's List" is not the way.

If we in the west can not be precise with our accusation, only resort of nefarious political indictment and sensational fabrication. Why should anyone take what we say seriousely?

Sincerely,

Charles Liu
